Trending for 2016: Eyelid Surgery & Nose Reshaping

Dr George Marcells and members of the About Face team routinely consult the websites of peer organisations for news and information, including statistical overviews of trends in the cosmetic surgery industry. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) recently published a report on the changing pace of plastic surgery, with details on a shift in the most requested procedures.
The United States has proven itself to be an excellent barometer of what’s happening here in Australia, so we’re sharing the highlights of that report in today’s article.
Top Five: Rhinoplasty Beats Eyelid Surgery by a Nose
Breast augmentation (279,143 procedures) and liposuction (222,051) have maintained their leading positions as the most-performed cosmetic surgery procedures in America. Following close behind the leaders are two procedures that are highly in demand at our practice:
- Rhinoplasty – 217,979 procedures performed in the U.S. in 2015
- Blepharoplasty – 203,924 procedures performed in the U.S. in 2015
1 in 3 Cosmetic Surgery Patients Influenced by Social Media
Dr Marcells is not surprised that face-focused cosmetic procedures are attracting more individuals daily. “Selfies have made us self-aware and self-conscious,” he says.
“31% of doctors polled by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery said people cited social media as a reason why they decided to get plastic surgery.” – NBC Media
The rise of selfies has led to a new level of facial self-scrutiny, as our portraits are instantly uploaded and distributed via Facebook, Snapchat, and Instagram. In addition to creating an uptick in appearance-enhancing surgeries for eyes and noses, the selfie trend may also be a factor in the popularity of these top minimally invasive treatments performed in the U.S.:
- Muscle-relaxing injections (6.7 million)
- Soft Tissue Fillers (2.4 million)
- Chemical Peel (1.3 million)
- Laser hair removal (1.1 million)
- Microdermabrasion (800,340)
Dr Marcells Reveals the #1 Trend in Cosmetic Enhancement.
Patients at our practice often ask which facial cosmetic enhancement procedures are gaining in popularity, so they can get on the bandwagon, too. Dr Marcells is happy to discuss trends, but he cautions patients against choosing a procedure simply because of a selfie posted by Kim Kardashian.
“The goal of my work as a facial plastic surgeon is to bring out the best in every patient, so that their unique beauty is enhanced, not changed.” – Dr George Marcells
Cosmetic procedures at our practice are designed to help you be yourself, only better.
