The Doctor Is In: Answers to Your Top Facial Plastics Questions

It would be marvellous to be an all-knowing, all-seeing Marvel Comics character, wouldn’t it? It would be easy to select treatments and surgical procedures if you had all the answers you needed to make an informed decision about the best approach to looking youthful and refreshed. If you’re not part of the Marvel Universe, we’d like to introduce you to our practice’s own “superhero,” Dr George Marcells.
Dr Marcells is a true master of his craft, achieved through education and practice. Beyond this, he is “super” at answering any questions his patients have about facial plastic surgery. He makes even the most complex medical procedures easy to understand. Here are some queries he’s dealt with recently…
“I’m just turning 40. Am I a good candidate for a surgical face lift?”
“Your age should not be a determining factor when it comes to facelift surgery,” says Dr Marcells. Each of us ages differently. Some patients may need a surgical solution to facial ageing when they’re in their 30’s while others may be able to postpone surgery until much later. As a rule of thumb, a surgical face lift is called for when less invasive solutions (such as muscle relaxants and volume augmentation) cease to be effective to correct:
- Loose skin
- Sagging skin
- Reduced facial volume
- Sagging jowls
- Changes in facial shape
The Australasian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons says, “…having a facelift too early can be useless as the effects of ageing accelerate as you get older. Meaning you could require repeat surgeries. That said, doing so too late is also not ideal.”
“Am I a fool to fool around with my nose?”
It’s common for patients to be fearful that cosmetic rhinoplasty may have more negative impacts than positive benefits. The worry is that nose surgery will:
- Create breathing problems
- Spoil facial proportions
“These are legitimate concerns,” acknowledges Dr Marcells. “The key is to work with a facial plastic surgeon skilled in surgical techniques and with a good aesthetic eye.” Checking online reviews and looking at a surgeon’s before and after photos can help guide you to a qualified surgeon, he says.
“I’m afraid of surgery. Do I have to resign myself to tired, droopy eyes?”
“Absolutely not,” says Dr Marcells. At our practice in Bondi Junction, we give eyes a non-surgical lift with cosmetic injectables. When precisely injected around the orbital rim, wrinkle treatments can:
- Reduce eye hollows
- Correct dark under-eye circles
- Improve the appearance of deep wrinkles
- Erase eye folds
- Lift and tone excess skin
“The benefits of your first treatment with fillers can last for up to two years,” reports Dr Marcells. Interestingly, the effects of subsequent injections may last even longer.
