Science News: 2 Cosmetic Enhancement Procedures Make You More Likeable

In today’s post, I’d like to share breaking news from the world of cosmetic enhancement research. A ground-breaking study is shedding light on a concept called “facial profiling” and an unexpected benefit that can come with cosmetic enhancement.
I think you’ll find it fascinating.
People like People Who Have Been Cosmetically Enhanced
We’re delighted that the vast majority of patients at About Face enjoy an increase in confidence and self-esteem after they have a procedure. As one patient at our Bondi Junction practice put it simply,
“I like myself better.”
She’s not the only one, it appears, according to the new scientific study, “Effect of Facial Rejuvenation Surgery on Perceived Attractiveness, Femininity, and Personality.” The study found that while facial plastic surgery changes the perception of patients about themselves, it also changes the perceptions of those around them. Furthermore,
Certain surgical procedures can actually influence how much your peers like you
The study was conducted at the Georgetown University School of Medicine and published in the JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery Journal. According to research data, the two procedures most likely to improve the perception of others regarding a person are:
- Blepharoplasty (lower eye lift)
- Facelift
4 Positive Traits Associated with Cosmetic Enhancement
When patientstalk with me about their goals for facialrejuvenation, they generally focus on external benefits such as improvements in their appearance. Some also talk about self-confidence, self-esteem, and other emotional benefits that come with looking more youthful.
The study shows that there are other far-reaching benefits of which they may be unaware.
Study participants looked at pre- and post-operative pictures of 30 women who had undergone facial rejuvenation surgery. The women in the pictures were rated for personality traits, femininity and attractiveness. The results were surprising. Post-operative women were rated as higher in
- Likeability
- Social Skills
- Attractiveness
- Femininity
What is it about the results of facial plastic surgery that trigger these responses? In a press release, the study author points to how we interpret changes to the mouth and cheeks:
“If the corners of someone’s mouth are turned down at rest, they are not going to be judged to be as likeable or socially skilled since it appears that they are sad or angry. If the cheeks are full and high, they are going to be perceived as much happier.” – Dr Michael Reilly, lead study author
Another explanation is offered by the president of the AAFPRS:
“The eyes are one of the first things we focus on when interacting with someone, so it makes sense that this facial feature was particularly influential in participants’ personality perceptions. Eyes are extremely expressive as our primary way of showing emotion and can have a large impact on resting or neutral facial expression.” – Dr Stephen S. Park
