Keeping it Real

You first visit the offices of Dr Marcells to ask questions and assess going ahead with a facial plastic surgery procedure. Rhinoplasty and the deep plane face and neck lift are the most commonly performed procedures; otoplasty (ears), brow lifts and blepharoplasty (eyelids) are also in demand.
While most of the time in any consultation is focussed on the intricacies of your procedure, discussion of everyday things sometimes comes into the conversation. We are dealing with humans with full lives, after all.
A person’s decision to go ahead with a procedure needs to take into account their goals as well as their sensitivities. It may be that recovery time is planned to be in their holidays, or a patient may want to be as fully recovered as possible before an event such as a wedding or family reunion.
It is normal and natural to share information in this confidential setting that helps us optimise the planning process.
“Taking the time for conversation is also part of ensuring the patient feels relaxed and not rushed into making decisions about what is best for them,” says Dr Marcells.
Listening
Every consultation with Dr Marcells is directed according to the patient’s needs.
Going through your medical history is an essential part of assessing and preparing you for facial plastic surgery.
“Understanding a person’s motivation or desire for a change is as essential, and this is why I take the time to listen.”
Assessing
“It is not only about assessing the physical dimensions – the specific areas of your face that you are self-conscious about. We also need to establish that you have realistic expectations in order to make healthy, informed decisions.”
Questions to Ask Yourself
- Why do I want to have this procedure? Is it for myself or someone else?
- What outcome or influence do I expect this will have in the key areas of my life (relationships and work)?
- Am I currently healthy? What lifestyle changes or attitudes am I prepared to undertake in order to optimise my results?
