Keeping It Real With Facial Plastic Surgery

by | Oct 10, 2014 | Blog

I am extremely proud of the work I do as a facial plastic surgeon and gratified that my expertise can help people reach their self-improvement goals, most of the time. As you’ll learn in this post, whether or not someone will be happy with the results of facial plastic surgery may have as much to do with the patient as with the surgeon.

An unrealistic expectation before surgery is the most common cause of dissatisfaction after surgery.

What Facial Plastic Surgery Can Do For You

Facial plastic surgery can accomplish a number of aesthetic goals. There are procedures that fine-tune facial features and others that improve the quality of your skin. Here are just a few examples of what I help my patients achieve:

  • A more refreshed appearance with a full facelift
  • Alert, well-rested looking eyes with eyelid surgery
  • A balanced and aesthetically pleasing nose with rhinoplasty
  • A tauter neck and no double chins with a neck lift

What Facial Plastic Surgery Can’t Do For You

Facial plastic surgery does help people make miraculous changes in their appearance, but it is not a miracle that will change your life or make your problems disappear. Surgery can make you look younger but will not dramatically alter your life or solve your problems. If this is what you expect, you need to alter your expectations or reconsider your plans to have facial plastic surgery.

If you are suffering from depression, facial plastic surgery will not change that. Nor will it help people who suffer from body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), a condition that causes people to have a distorted view of their appearance. Both these psychological challenges require the help of a professional therapist.

Facial plastic surgery cannot make you look like Nicole Kidman or Jennifer Hawkins, nor should it. Cosmetic enhancement, as the name suggests, is about enhancing who you are, not changing you into someone else. Your bone structure and facial tissue are unique to your face.

Anyone who is considering a procedure with the hope of looking like a celebrity is doomed to disappointment, and any surgeon worth his/her salt will refuse to operate on a patient with such an outrageous request.

Getting a Second Opinion for Facial Plastic Surgery

If one surgeon advises you that you are not a good candidate for facial plastic surgery, it is unlikely that other surgeons will disagree. Please don’t search until you find a surgeon who is willing to perform a procedure that others are not.

You’re likely to be putting yourself at great risk and no facial rejuvenation procedure is worth your health.
