Facelift in a Bottle?

We live in amazing times. Almost daily, we’re treated to exciting news about advancements in science, medicine, and beauty, too. Many of these advancements will prove to be of genuine value to millions of people. Others turn out to be nothing more than a flash in the pan, helping a few unscrupulous people line their pockets with gold.
Accordingly, when we read about a new two-step cream than researchers say “tightens up baggy eyes and can keep dry legs from flaking,” our excitement was mitigated by a little bit of healthy scepticism.
Here’s the science behind the new sensation.
From the Research Labs: 5 Benefits of Second Skin
About a decade ago, a research team at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology set out to develop a protective coating for the skin. The goal was to find a way to control the properties of skin by coating it with polymers that would impart beneficial effects.
In May of 2016, the team announced the results of their work: XPL, a new silicone-based polymer. The material is intended to be applied to the skin in a whisper-thin coating. Once there, researchers say it can
- Temporarily protect and tighten skin
- Erase wrinkles
- Smooth out eye bags
- Create a protective barrier against the sun
- Deliver medication to skin conditions (eczema) and other types of dermatitis
Does this sound too good to be true to you? It may well be. It should be noted that these impressive results were achieved using just four test groups with limited subjects.
“Consistent results achieved over time are the true test of any new product or procedure. While the idea of a facelift in a bottle is appealing, there is a great deal more research needed.” – Dr George Marcells
We remain cautiously optimistic about the findings at M.I.T. and will let you know as more news develops. This may leave you asking:
“What should I do if I need a face lift?”
It’s a question we love to hear.
