I am regularly invited to local and international cosmetic surgery, multi-disciplinary, medical specialty meetings to share my knowledge and advanced techniques.
At this year’s Cosmetex conference, I lectured on two different topics:
- Deep Plane Face and Necklift surgery
- Nasal Tip Refinement in Primary and Revision Rhinoplasty

The Australasian Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery (AAFPS) holds a Rhinoplasty Dissection Course at St Vincent’s Hospital annually. I am a regular lecturer and supervisor in the dissection workshop where we teach rhinoplasty surgical techniques from beginner level through to experienced surgeon level.
Convenor
I am Past President of the AAFPS and remain actively engaged in its major educational events. I was co-convenor with Dr Peter Callan and Dr Sim Choroomi of this year’s AAFPS Masters Face Symposium, held at Sydney Hospital and the Maritime Museum.
We had international guest lecturers including:
- Dr Neil Gordon of New York and the Splitrock Retreat in Connecticut. Dr Gordon is a professor at Yale University and has been a prime innovator of the Deep Plane Facelift,
- Tim Marten of San Francisco & the innovator of the high SMAS Facelift technique,
- Dr Jim Grotting of Birmingham Alabama.
Bryan Mendelsohn of Melbourne rounded out the keynote faculty.
The Symposium started with the dissection workshop at Sydney Hospital where the keynote lecturers demonstrated their face lift and neck lift surgical techniques for the experienced surgeon.
Choice
Deep Plane Face and Necklift surgery is not something that can be learned overnight, even by the most experienced ENT, Head and Neck Surgeons and Plastic Surgeons.
My work in facial plastic surgery has been developing over thirty years, and in 2011 I was the first surgeon in Australia to perform Deep Plane Face and Necklfit surgery here.
I learned the details of Deep Plane Face and Necklift surgery directly from Dr Neil Gordon. As well as being a pioneer, he has refined the technique over many years.
I frequently go back to visit him, including in the past few months, and learn any nuances and subtleties. This keeps me up with the best practice.
Mentor
The Sydney Facial Plastic Surgery Fellowship is a one-year advanced surgical program. The Fellow observes and assists in a variety of surgical procedures including Rhinoplasty, Facelift, Browlift surgery and Blepharoplasty as well as facial skin cancer treatments. They also complete several research papers before sitting for the International Board Exams in Facial Plastic Surgery.
I am the program supervisor and the Fellow also works with Dr Sim Choroomi, Dr Michael Zacharia, Dr Gillian Dunlop, Dr Catherine Meller, Professor Richard Harvey and Oculoplastic Surgeon Dr Angelo Tsirbas.
Dr Leonie Wijermars from Holland spent a year with us on Fellowship then sat and passed the International Board Exams in Facial Plastic Surgery in Washington, with Distinction. It was a delight to support her dedication to learning and we wish her the best of luck in her career when she returns to Holland.
Our current Fellow, Dr Rodrigo Cabezon, is already an accomplished surgeon in Santiago, Chile but wishes to advance his expertise in Facial Plastic Surgery here in Sydney.
