Dr George Marcells First-Timers Guide to Facial Plastic

I had a funny conversation with a prospective patient the other day who told me she had been “bitten by the facial plastic surgery bug.” She was excited about the prospect of rejuvenating her appearance but knew very little about how to proceed. She needed my guidance, and I was happy to give it to her.
That conversation led to this blog post, a 5-step primer designed to help you get ready for a procedure. It doesn’t matter whether you’re considering a non-invasive treatment such as dermal filler injections or surgery such as a facelift or rhinoplasty. These five steps are the first ones to take on your road to looking beautiful.
Step 1 – Pick the Right Provider for Facial Rejuvenation
Facial plastic surgery is a specialty, and you should look for a surgeon who is specifically trained, qualified, and experienced in performing facial rejuvenation. Look for afacial plastic surgeon who is a member of the Australasian Academy of Facial Plastic Surgeons (AAFPS). The AAFPS requires that each member be a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS), the benchmark standard for surgical certification.
Advice: Don’t be afraid to enquire and verify your facial plastic surgeon’s credentials.
Step 2 – Get Educated About Facial Rejuvenation
Facial plastic surgery is a popular topic in the media, and many people are eager to jump on the bandwagon of the latest treatment technique. Before you rush into any procedure, I recommend that you do some research before scheduling an appointment.
Advice: Think about your long and short-term goals to determine whether a “great new procedure” is right for you. Then talk things over with your surgeon.
Step 3 – Prepare for Your Consultation
All the patients we see at Bondi Junction meet with me for a consultation. At that time, I talk with them about their goals, their medical history, and their lifestyles so that we can offer the best possible guidance regarding various procedures and techniques.
Advice: Write down a list of questions so you don’t forget anything, and be prepared to answer questions about what you don’t like about your features and why.
Step 4 – Consider a Measured Approach to Facial Rejuvenation
It’s tempting to think in terms of “The Full Monty” when it comes to facial rejuvenation, envisioning an extreme makeover of epic proportions. In truth, however, it may be better – for your appearance and your wallet – to create a cosmetic enhancement road map that takes you from today into the future.
Advice: Even if your surgeon recommends a range of procedures, remember that they don’t all need to be performed at the same time.
Step 5 – Get Your Body Ready
A healthy body is your best asset when it comes to an optimal outcome from a cosmetic enhancement procedure. Some of the things you can do immediately to start preparing for your procedures are:
- Eat a well-balanced diet
- Avoid processed sugar and alcohol (they suppress wound healing)
- Get 6-8 hours of sleep per night (your body needs time to refresh/repair itself)
- Exercise regularly (even simple walking will help improve cardiovascular health)
- Stop smoking (it restricts blood flow)
