Anti-Ageing: Prevention is Better than Cure!

by | Dec 2, 2016 | Blog

The patients at our Edgecliff practice have one thing in common: they’re generally avid readers, at least of beauty magazines. One of our younger patients pointed out that in the June edition of Elle Australia, a representative of the Australasian College of Dermatologists said:

Like most things when it comes to health – and I like to look at anti-ageing in the sense that we’re maximising our wellness – it’s about prevention. I always look at early intervention as prevention.

This idea makes good sense to us, and today’s article is dedicated to our favourite “prevention is better than cure” tactics.

The #1 Way to Prevent Skin Ageing

“The Australian sun is appealing,” acknowledges Dr Marcells. “However, if you don’t take measures to protect your skin from its damaging rays, your skin will look old before its time, and so will you.” Professional skin care guidance is an excellent solution. Expert aestheticians such as we have at our practice are trained to help individuals navigate the sometimes confusing world of make-up, skincare, and SPF

“Our bespoke approach to skincare starts with an assessment of an individual’s skin,” says Dr Marcells. Professional assessment makes it possible for our team to identify the best skincare products for sun protection and anti-ageing based on an individual’s need, not a pre-packaged ‘solution-in-a-box.’ Dr Marcells recommends Eyra Care products for his patient’s daily regimen.

4 Things to Do NOW to Prevent Ageing Skin Later

You can’t turn back the hands of time, but you can slow them down with these simple strategies:

    • Ease up on over-drying your skin – Patients in their 20’s, some remembering the problem skin of their teens, often use too-strong cleansers. This strips essential moisture and causes dead skin to build up.
    • Take care of your neck like you do your face – Our love of mobile phones is leading to a less lovable problem called “tech neck.” The angle of the head and neck during a normal conversation causes premature folds and wrinkles. “You don’t have to give up your phone,” Dr Marcells says. “Just be sure to give your neck the same daily care you give your face.”
    • Say aye-aye to eye cream – Eyes are a hardworking part of the body. They express a mountain of emotions, and we thank them for their duty by rubbing them with our knuckles. Bad form! Keeping eyes hydrated and nourished with a good eye cream can help prevent ageing eye wrinkles.
    • Say yes to regular facials and chemical peels – Professional treatments such as micro peels destroy dry, dead skin cells and allow new glowing skin to replace it.
