An Eye for Beauty

Every year the Australasian Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery holds a multidisciplinary meeting for professional currency.
These meetings are important as they bring together a variety of medical, surgical and sub-specialities practitioners – top level local and international aesthetic and reconstructive surgeons including facial plastic surgeons, ENT surgeons, plastic surgeons, oculoplastic surgeons, and dermatologists all focused on a chosen topic.
The topics rotate every three years: face, nose, eyes.
Dr George Marcells is past president of the AAFPS and co-convenor of this year’s Fourth Multidisciplinary Masters’ Symposium on Blepharoplasty and Facial Rejuvenation. As the title suggests, it’s all about the eyes.

Brow Lift before and after
Aced it!
This Symposium was initially planned to be held in Melbourne, coinciding with the Australian Open Tennis, an added bonus for international guests wishing to attend a few matches. Alas, like many planned events… the AAFPS Fourth Multidisciplinary Masters Symposium on Blepharoplasty and Upper Facial Rejuvenation is now being held online.
From Beverly Hills to Bondi Junction, the latest techniques on brow lifting, blepharoplasty (eyelids surgery) and ocular aesthetics will be showcased virtually. Cross-fertilisation of ideas from different specialties and top surgeons comparing notes on their approaches with all the nuances involved continually advances the field. This ultimately translates to better outcomes for patients.
Eye Rejuvenation
At this year’s international Masters’ Symposium, Dr Marcells is presenting on the topic: “Endocrinal Brow Lifting and Planning Brow Lifts”.
Dr Marcells has been performing brow lifts, along with other facial rejuvenation procedures, for close to three decades.
“We aim to achieve a refreshed look of a person’s eyes. Results need to be natural looking and not distorted”, he says.
Reasons people enquire about eyelid surgery include:
- “My eyelids are heavy”
- “My eyelids have dropped as I’ve aged”
- “My vision is impaired and I’m becoming tired due to the added strain of droopy eyebrows”
- “I’m looking tired”
- “I would like to have higher arching eyebrows” (especially for young people with heavy brows)
Dr Marcells regularly performs eyebrow and eyelid surgery, sometimes in combination with other procedures such as rhinoplasty or facelift.
Happy New Year
As it’s the start of a new year, I’ll leave you with these words from 13th century Sufi mystic and poet, Rumi:
Listen with the ears of tolerance!
See through the eyes of compassion!
Speak with the language of love.
We look forward to seeing you in 2021.
