3 Ways Paleo Fights Ageing Skin

3 Ways Paleo Fights Ageing Skin
Recently, patients have been talking to us about the Paleo lifestyle. The majority first tried the Paleo Diet as a way to lose weight and improve their overall health. As an added bonus, they discovered that a diet low in processed sugar and refined carbs is a way to keep blood sugar levels in check, slowing down the formation of excess toxins that can accelerate skin ageing.
You don’t have to go “full Paleo” to get the benefits of the diet. Even modest adjustments in your food consumption will be rewarded with improved skin health. If eating your way to beautiful skin sounds as delicious to you as it does to us, please keep reading.
Why Cavemen (and Women) Had Beautiful Skin
Unlike a typical Australian’s diet, the Paleo Diet seeks to eliminate foods that contribute to inflammation. When it comes to skin, this approach to eating directly addresses the three major contributors to unhealthy skin:
- Inflammation
- Gut Dysbiosis (a microbial imbalance)
- Nutrient deficiencies
Paleo Diet vs. Skin Inflammation
Inflammation is strongly associated with excessive consumption of industrial seed oils such as soybean, corn, and canola. While these foods sound healthy, they can actually add excessive amounts of Omega-6 fat to your diet. Omega-6s, unlike healthy Omega-3s, disrupt your body’s normal inflammatory response and can trigger skin problems like dryness, redness, and wrinkles, not to mention psoriasis, acne, and eczema.
Healthy Gut, Healthy Skin
Scientists are learning more and more that the health of your gut is directly reflected in the health of your skin. Gut health can be compromised by things like
- Wheat gluten
- Grain protein
- Excessive alcohol
- Excessive stress
The Paleo Diet can’t reduce the stress in your life, but it can reduce the stress to your gut. As well as prohibiting the foods above, it also supports gut health by recommending fermentable fibres, bone broth, and fermented foods.
Don’t Just Feed Me, Nourish Me
Manufactured and processed foods may satisfy your hunger, but they don’t always nourish your body. The Paleo Diet is filled with nutrient-dense foods such as veggies, meats, and starchy tubers. These deliver a mountain of vitamins and minerals to your body. Beyond these body-nourishing substances, the Paleo Diet includes plenty of skin-loving, collagen-building foods such as tendons and skin, and gelatinous cuts of meat such as you’d find in Vietnamese pho.
