10 Questions & Answers about Facelifts

by | Mar 10, 2017 | Blog

A patient at our Edgecliff practice recently asked, “Will cosmetic injectables replace facelifts?” While there is no way to predict the future with certainty, we believe that facelifts are here to stay. They produce results that simply cannot be achieved with other facial rejuvenation techniques.

Today we answer questions about this popular procedure:

What Patients Want to Know about Facelifts

The most frequently asked questions about facelifts include:

Am I too old/young for a facelift?

Age is not the determining question in deciding whether you should have a facelift. Physical health, mental attitude, and your goals are more important.

Will a facelift rejuvenate my face?

The answer is yes, if:

  • Facial features are beginning to hollow
  • Skin looks crepe-y
  • Jowl skin sags below your jaw line
  • Collagen has been lost

How long do facelift results last?

The benefits of a facelift can last up to ten years, depending on the technique, the surgeon, and the patient.

What is the best kind of facelift?

The best facelift is what’s right for you. Depending on different factors, a surgeon may recommend a

  • Deep Plane Lift
  • Midface/Cheek Lift
  • Short Scar/Endoscopic Lift
  • SMAS Lift
  • Thread Lift

Dr Marcells prefers the Deep Plane Lift, considered the gold standard in facial rejuvenation.

How long does facelift surgery take?

The length of the procedure will depend on the type of facelift being performed and whether or not other procedures, such as eyelid and brow surgery, are being done at the same time. A Deep Plane Lift typically takes five to six hours.

How long will it take me to recover from a facelift?

Generally, swelling recedes in 10-14 days, and most people can return to their normal activities, with some modifications, at that time.

What will I look like after a facelift?

A facelift will make you look like you, only better. You should look refreshed, less tired, and more youthful.

What should I look for in a facial plastic surgeon? Choosing an experienced surgeon (like Dr Marcells) is the best way to avoid negative results, such as skin that has been pulled too tightly.

What are the risks of having a facelift?

Like any surgery, facelifts carry the risk of infection, scarring, and loss of muscle sensation.

Should I wait to have a facelift until after I lose weight?

If you are planning a large weight loss (good for you!), it is wise to delay your surgery. If you’re just looking to drop a few kilos, however, it is okay to proceed.
